Version 0.3.3 of the great SopCast Player has been released the other day along with sp-auth 3.2.6. A PPA for Ubuntu Karmic Koala is also available. Simply
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jason-scheunemann/ppa
to add the repository.
sudo apt-get install sopcast-player
installs all the necessary software.

SopCast Player
As of Karmic Koala Ubuntu introduces a new and simplified way to add repositories. From the command line you would just add
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
to register for example the Xorg-Edgers repository with APT and acquire the public key if required in one step.
I usually make use of a couple of third party repositories like Medibuntu, Xorg-Edgers, SMPlayer and XBMC SVN. Beeing a heavy user of Guake terminal this is just a very convenient and fast way to work with repositories.
SopCast Player won’t work in Karmic Koala. That’s because the lack of libstdc++5 which can however easily be installed from the Jaunty repositories http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libstdc++5.
I recently discovered that I wouldn’t have sound over the internal speakers of my nx8220 after waking up from suspend in Karmic Koala Beta. This seems to be a known regression in the Kernel and I wasn’t in the mood of trying to fix it the hard way. What I found out though is that
sudo alsa force-reload
brings sound back.
Recently I got hooked on Battle for Wesnoth which is a free turn-based strategy game. Given that the version in Ubuntu Jaunty’s respositories is rather outdated I found newer packages at IT-Wesnoth. Primarily set up for Debian the packages work just fine with Ubuntu Jaunty. Which they should since it’s based on Debian – but who knows beforehand? Those who want to try might add the repository from here for the stable version 1.6.5 or development version 1.7.5. Direct downloads of the packages are available here.
I really like the Dust GTK theme. What I missed though is the incredible Dustfox Firefox theme available here: https://launchpad.net/dusttheme-firefox.
As mentioned earlier this year Sopcast delivers a great possibility to watch international football over the internet. Those who don’t like GTK-sopcast can now switch over to SopCast-Player.
SopCast Player is designed to be an easy to use Linux GUI front-end for the p2p streaming technology developed by SopCast. SopCast Player features an integrated video player, a channel guide, and bookmarks. Once SopCast Player is installed it simply “just works” with no required configuration.
GUI lovers will definitely improve their P2P streaming experience. Previous installations of GTK-sopcast will have to be removed prior to installing SopCast-Player, though.

Again a great and affordable game by PopCap. It’s an highly addictive tower-defense type of game with very funny moments and nice graphics. Although developed for Windows and Mac it runs perfectly with WINE on Linux. Have a look at the Wikipedia article or the PopCap website for more information and more games that do well work with WINE.
